Suction Electrode Placement

Suction electrode placement is a technique for recording or stimulating electrical activity in isolated nerves, muscles, or other excitable tissues, making it useful for studying neural signaling. A small electrode is positioned over the tissue and gently sealed with suction, creating stable electrical contact while minimizing movement and preserving the preparation; neural impulses generate extracellular voltage changes that the recording system detects. In neuroscience, careful placement supports measurement of compound action potentials, conduction properties, and responses to experimental stimulation. The method is valuable for teaching electrophysiology and investigating how neuronal signals are transmitted across intact nerve pathways.

Non-restraining EEG radiotelemetry is a valuable methodological approach to record in vivo long-term electroencephalograms from freely moving rodents. This detailed protocol describes stereotaxic epidural and deep intracerebral electrode placement in different brain regions in order to obtain reliable recordings of CNS rhythmicity and CNS related behavioral stages.

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...
