Dielectric Materials

Dielectric materials are electrical insulators that can be polarized by an applied electric field, making them important for controlling energy storage and signal behavior in physics and engineering. When the field displaces bound positive and negative charges within the material, it creates electric polarization and changes the material’s permittivity, or ability to support an electric field. These properties allow dielectrics to increase capacitor storage, separate conductors, guide electromagnetic waves, and influence the performance of sensors and electronic devices. Their polarization response, dielectric loss, and resistance to electrical breakdown help researchers select materials for energy systems, communications, microelectronics, and emerging technologies.

Using Microwave and Macroscopic Samples of Dielectric Solids to Study the Photonic Properties of Disordered Photonic Bandgap Materials

2014

Disordered structures offer new mechanisms for forming photonic bandgaps and unprecedented freedom in functional-defect designs. To circumvent the computational challenges of disordered systems, we construct modular macroscopic samples of the new class of PBG materials and use microwaves to characterize their scale-invariant photonic properties, in an easy and inexpensive manner.

Capacitor With A Dielectric

2023

Parallel plate capacitors consist of two conducting plates separated by a certain distance. However, it is mechanically difficult to hold the large plates parallel to each other without actual contact. Hence, a dielectric layer is commonly placed between the plates, which provides an easy solution for holding the plates together with a small gap and increases the capacitance of the capacitor. Dielectrics are non-conducting materials with no free or loosely bound electrons. When a dielectric is...

This manuscript shows the fabrication process for the manufacture of dielectric elastomer soft actuators based on silicone membranes. The three key stages of production are presented in detail: blade casting of thin silicone membranes; pad printing of compliant electrodes; and the assembly of all the components.

Gauss's Law in Dielectrics

Consider a polar dielectric placed in an external field. In such a dielectric, opposite charges on adjacent dipoles neutralize each other, such that the net charge within the dielectric is zero. When a polar dielectric is inserted in between the capacitor plates, an electric field is generated due to the presence of net charges near the edge of the dielectric and the metal plates interface. Since the external electrical field merely aligns the dipoles, the dielectric as a whole is neutral. An...
