Fluid Speed Measurement

Fluid speed measurement is the determination of how fast a liquid or gas moves, a fundamental task in physics and engineering. Common methods infer velocity from a measurable effect: a particle or tracer may be timed between two points, while a Pitot tube converts the pressure difference between stagnation and static pressure into speed through Bernoulli’s principle. These approaches support flow analysis in pipes, channels, wind tunnels, and environmental systems, helping researchers quantify transport, validate fluid-dynamics models, detect changes in operating conditions, and improve the design and control of pumps, vehicles, and industrial processes.

Pitot-static Tube: A Device to Measure Air Flow Speed

2023

Source: David Guo, College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA), Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), Manchester, New Hampshire A Pitot-static tube is widely used for measuring unknown speeds in air flow, for example, it is used to measure airplane airspeed. By Bernoulli's principle, airspeed is directly related to variations in pressure. Therefore, the Pitot-static tube senses the stagnation pressure and static pressure. It is connected to a manometer or pressure transducer...

Spatial Measurement of Tumor Interstitial Fluid Pressure: A Method to Measure the Interstitial Fluid Pressure

2023

This video describes a technique of measuring the interstitial fluid pressure within a tumor by perfusion imaging using an image-guided robotic system. Measurements are compared to the intra-tumoral accumulation of liposomes, within a solid tumor.

Measurement of Fluid Pressure

2025

Fluid pressure is commonly measured using devices called manometers, which rely on liquid columns to indicate pressure differences. The height of a liquid column in a manometer reflects the pressure exerted by the fluid, providing a simple yet effective means of measurement. Different types of manometers serve specific purposes based on their configurations and the type of fluids involved. A basic form of manometer is the piezometer, a vertical tube open at the top and filled with the same...

An Assay for Measuring the Effects of Ethanol on the Locomotion Speed of Caenorhabditis elegans

C. elegans is a useful model for studying the effects of ethanol on behavior. We present a behavioral assay that quantifies the effects of ethanol on the locomotion speed of crawling worms; both initial sensitivity and the development of acute functional tolerance to ethanol can be measured with this assay.

The goal of this protocol is to use temperature to control the flow speeds of three-dimensional active fluids. The advantage of this method not only allows for regulating flow speeds in situ but also enables dynamic control, such as periodically tuning flow speeds up and down.
