Agency Development

Agency development is the psychological process through which people build the capacity to initiate purposeful actions, make choices, and influence events in their lives. It develops through the interaction of self-efficacy, motivation, self-regulation, and feedback, as individuals set goals, act on their intentions, evaluate outcomes, and adjust their behavior. Studying agency development helps psychologists understand autonomy, decision-making, resilience, and personal growth across the lifespan. It also informs education, psychotherapy, parenting, and social programs by identifying conditions that support active participation, adaptive control, and a stronger sense of influence over personal and social environments.
