Ambiguous Pictures

Ambiguous pictures are visual images that support two or more valid interpretations, revealing how perception is constructed rather than passively recorded. The brain alternates between competing percepts by combining sensory information with attention, prior knowledge, and figure-ground organization, so the same image may be seen differently over time or by different observers. In psychology, these stimuli help researchers study visual perception, Gestalt principles, attention, and the influence of expectations on interpretation. They are also used to examine perceptual switching, individual differences, and how the mind resolves incomplete or conflicting information, providing a clear model for understanding broader processes of cognition.

Children's Reliance on Artist Intentions When Identifying Pictures

2023

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Children are not the best artists. Sometimes it’s easy to pick out the characteristic triangular head, whiskers, and tail of a cat, but children often describe elaborate scenarios that they depict as a beautifully unrecognizable mess. Thus, given children’s questionable artistic talent, how do they know what their drawings, and the drawings of others, represent? One way children identify pictures is by relying...

Virtual Hand with Ambiguous Movement between the Self and Other Origin: Sense of Ownership and 'Other-Produced' Agency

While previous research on bodily self-consciousness assumed that self- and other-origin movements were perceptually distinguishable, this protocol allows them to be ambiguous on a virtual hand with unintentional slight movements. This enables us to observe one’s experience formed by SoO and other-produced SoA, rather than the absence of SoA.

Experimental Research Examining How People Can Cope with Uncertainty Through Soft Haptic Sensations

To date research has focused on cognitive strategies people adopt to cope with uncertainty. This research examines instead an experiential way of dealing with uncertainty and introduces a set of experimental methods showing how the experience of haptic softness can serve as a tool to deal with uncertainty.

Transsynaptic Tracing from Peripheral Targets with Pseudorabies Virus Followed by Cholera Toxin and Biotinylated Dextran Amines Double Labeling

Transsynaptic tracing has become a powerful tool for analyzing central efferents regulating peripheral targets through multi-synaptic circuits. Here we present a protocol that exploits the transsynaptic pseudorabies virus to identify and localize a functional brain circuit, followed by classical tract tracing techniques to validate specific connections in the circuit between identified groups of neurons.
