Parietal Cortex

The parietal cortex is a region of the cerebral cortex that integrates information about the body and surrounding space, making it essential for perception, attention, and goal-directed behavior. It combines somatosensory, visual, and proprioceptive signals to construct spatial representations, then helps transform these representations into actions such as reaching, orienting attention, and navigating. In psychology, studying the parietal cortex clarifies how the brain supports spatial cognition, body awareness, numerical processing, and multisensory perception. Research using neuroimaging, behavioral experiments, and studies of brain injury also shows how disruptions in this region can impair attention, movement planning, or awareness of one side of space.

Source: Fritsch, B. et al. Transcranial Electrical Brain Stimulation in Alert Rodents. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the implantation of electrodes and the application of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) to the motor cortex of alert rats. It outlines the steps involved in electrode placement, stimulation delivery, and the resulting neuronal and microglial activation, highlighting its neurotherapeutic potential.

Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS) allows the modulation of cortical excitability in a frequency-specific fashion. Here we show a unique approach which combines online tACS with single pulse Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in order to "probe" cortical excitability by means of Motor Evoked Potentials.

Colorimetric Detection of Cortex Degradation During Bacterial Spore Germination

Source: Francis, M. B., et al. Detecting Cortex Fragments During Bacterial Spore Germination. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates a colorimetric method to detect cortex degradation during bacterial spore germination by measuring the release of reducing sugars over time. Using N-acetylglucosamine standards and time-point samples, the assay quantifies sugar concentration through a purple chromogenic reaction, indicating the extent of cortex hydrolysis.
