Auditory Acuity

Auditory acuity is the ability to detect, distinguish, and interpret sounds, making it a key measure of how sensory information supports communication and behavior. It depends on the auditory system’s sensitivity to sound frequency and intensity, as well as the brain’s processing of signals from the ear to identify differences in pitch, loudness, and timing. In psychology, researchers assess auditory acuity through detection thresholds, discrimination tasks, and responses to speech or other controlled sounds. These measures help evaluate perception, attention, development, aging, and hearing-related changes, while clarifying how sensory processing influences learning, social interaction, and everyday decision-making.

Auditory brainstem neurons of avians and mammals are specialized for fast neural encoding, a fundamental process for normal hearing functions. These neurons arise from distinct precursors of embryonic hindbrain. We present techniques utilizing electroporation to express genes in the hindbrain of chicken embryos to study gene function during auditory development.

(2023)This video demonstrates the measurement of auditory brainstem response (ABR) in a mouse. Electrodes are placed on the head, behind the ear, and near the tail of an anesthetized mouse. Acoustic stimuli at various intensities are delivered, and electric signals generated are recorded as waveforms.

A novel motion-based acuity test that allows the assessment of central and peripheral visual processing in low-vision and healthy individuals, along with goggles limiting peripheral vision compatible with MRI protocols, are described here. This method offers a comprehensive vision assessment for functional impairments and dysfunctions of the visual system.
