Behavioral Outcomes

Behavioral outcomes are observable changes in actions, responses, or performance that result from psychological processes, experiences, or interventions. In psychology, researchers assess these outcomes by measuring behaviors such as decision-making, learning, social interaction, avoidance, or task performance under defined conditions, often linking them to cognition, emotion, motivation, or environmental cues. Behavioral outcomes provide measurable evidence of how people respond to stressors, treatments, developmental experiences, and social contexts. They support research in clinical psychology, education, health, and behavioral science by helping evaluate interventions, test theories, and identify factors that influence adaptation and well-being.

The unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) protocol is a validated method for studying behavioral and physiological changes associated with chronic stress and depressive symptoms. Eight weeks of imposition of the UCMS protocol induces behavioral changes and poor health outcomes in rodents of either gender.

Rodent Stereotaxic Surgery and Animal Welfare Outcome Improvements for Behavioral Neuroscience

Stereotaxic surgery on rodents allows for targeted administration of drugs or electrical stimulation and recordings in awake, behaving animals. In this video presentation we will demonstrate recent procedural refinements to this long-standing procedure that successfully improved survival rate and reduced post-surgical weight loss.

Stereotactic Injection of MicroRNA-expressing Lentiviruses to the Mouse Hippocampus CA1 Region and Assessment of the Behavioral Outcome

MicroRNAs have significant roles in brain structure and function. Here we describe a method to enforce hippocampal miRNA over-expression using stereotactic injection of an engineered miRNA-expressing lentivirus. This approach can serve as a relatively rapid way to assess the in vivo effects of over-expressed miRNAs in specific brain regions.

Here, we present a protocol to quantify nest building behavior in mice, which is known to be impaired in several neurological disorders and diseases. This protocol examines the utility of four materials and offers the opportunity to quantify the rater agreement in scoring, improving the validity and reliability of the assay.
