Emotional Categories

Emotional categories are psychological systems that group affective experiences according to shared features such as valence, arousal, expression, and behavioral function. Researchers classify emotions using discrete categories, such as fear, anger, joy, and sadness, or dimensional models that map experiences along continua of pleasantness and activation; these categories reflect interactions among appraisal, bodily responses, cognition, and social context. In psychology, emotional categories help organize research on emotion regulation, personality, mental health, and interpersonal behavior. They also support assessment and intervention by clarifying how people identify, interpret, and respond to emotional states across different situations.

Instead, humans develop categories. Categories are mental representations of real things that can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, individuals can use the perceptual features of animals to place them into a given...

We present a protocol that uses functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural correlates of the memory-enhancing effect of emotion. This protocol allows identification of brain activity specifically linked to memory-related processing, contrary to more general perceptual processing, and can be used with healthy and clinical populations.

Economists, as well, have come to appreciate that an individual’s financial decisions are not solely the result of extensive cost-benefit calculations; other factors like emotion are at play. Further, incidental emotions affect the behavior of buyers and sellers even though they are...
