Gender Development

Gender development is the lifelong process through which people form understandings of gender, including identity, expression, roles, and expectations, making it central to psychological research on human development. It reflects ongoing interactions among biological influences, cognitive processes, relationships, cultural norms, and social experiences; children and adolescents actively interpret gender-related information while observing models and receiving feedback from their environments. Studying these processes helps psychologists understand variation in identity and behavior without reducing gender to a single cause. Findings inform inclusive education, family and clinical practice, mental-health support, and research on how social contexts shape well-being across the lifespan.

For instance, boys may be discouraged from engaging in activities perceived as feminine, reinforcing culturally dictated norms about masculinity...

A straight-forward set of methods to isolate and determine the identity of the most abundant proteins expressed in skeletal muscle. About 800 spots are discerned on a two-dimensional gel from 10 mg muscle; this allows for the determination of gender-specific protein expression. These methods will give equivalent results in most tissues.
