Mental Operation Isolation

Mental operation isolation is a psychological research approach that separates a specific cognitive process from other mental activities so researchers can examine its role in behavior. It works by designing tasks that target one operation, such as attention, memory retrieval, decision-making, or mental transformation, while controlling or minimizing competing processes and comparing responses across conditions. This approach helps clarify how cognition is organized, reveals the contributions of distinct operations to performance, and supports the development of more precise models of thinking. In psychology, it can inform research on learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and cognitive changes associated with development or neurological conditions.
