Self-deprecation

Self-deprecation is a pattern of self-directed criticism or humor that downplays a person’s abilities, appearance, achievements, or social value, and psychology studies it as both communication and self-evaluative behavior. It may operate through impression management, emotion regulation, or social bonding: a person frames a perceived flaw before others can judge it, reduces interpersonal tension, or signals humility, although repeated negative self-talk can reinforce low self-esteem and invite unfavorable responses. Researchers examine self-deprecation in social interaction, mental health, and personality research to distinguish adaptive humor from persistent self-criticism, improving understanding of coping, relationships, and potential targets for cognitive and behavioral interventions.
