Retrospective Study

A retrospective study is an observational research design that examines existing records or previously collected data to investigate relationships between past exposures and outcomes. Researchers begin with outcomes or a defined cohort, then look backward through medical records, databases, surveys, or registries to compare groups and estimate measures such as prevalence, odds ratios, or relative risk. In statistics, retrospective studies support hypothesis generation, evaluation of risk factors, and analysis of uncommon diseases or long-latency conditions when prospective follow-up is impractical. Because researchers do not assign exposures, careful sampling, control of confounding, and attention to missing data and selection or recall bias are essential for valid interpretation.
