タンパク質は、しばしば誤って折りたたまれたタンパク質と呼ばれる誤った形状に折り畳まれることがあり、これはプロテアソームによって分解されます。

加齢や病気によるシャペロンやプロテアソームの機能不全など、細胞のモニタリングが不十分な場合、タンパク質が異常な形状にとどまる可能性があります。
