天然の砂には、腐敗した植物性物質などの有機不純物が含まれている可能性があり、セメントの水和を妨げます。
有機物の存在を検出するために比色試験が行われ、これは骨材を含む溶液の色によって判断できます。溶液が暗いほど、その中の有機物が多くなります。
石を粉砕して得られる粘土、シルト、破砕機の粉塵などの微細な不純物は、骨材をコーティングし、セメントペーストとの結合を悪くします。
さらに、微細な不純物が存在すると、濡れる表面積が増大するため、混合、配置、および仕上げにより多くの水が必要になります。この過剰な水分は、乾燥収縮と亀裂の可能性を高めます。
湿式ふるい法は、粗骨材中の微細な不純物の存在を決定するために使用されます。 
細骨材に含まれる過剰な塩分は、鉄筋の腐食につながり、空気中の水分を吸収して、コンクリートの白華を引き起こします。
頁岩などの低密度材料や、粘土の塊、石炭、木材などの骨材に柔らかい介在物が存在すると、負荷がかかると破損し、コンクリートの孔食や飛び出しが発生する可能性があります。

骨材中の有害物質

骨材に含まれる有害物質は、コンクリートの品質と耐久性に悪影響を及ぼす可能性があります。これらの物質には、通常は砂の中に存在するロームなどの有機不純物が含まれます。これらは、セメントの水和や、骨材とセメントペーストの良好な結合を妨げます。有機不純物は比色試験を使用して検出できます。比色試験では、撹拌後の溶液の暗さが有機含有量のレベルを示します。

 最後に、耐久性がなく、水を吸収する粒子である、頁岩、石炭、雲母などを含む骨材は、コンクリートの劣化につながる可能性があります。米国材料試験協会 (ASTM) C 33-03 は、骨材中のこれらの不健全な粒子の許容レベルを定めています。適切な試験と基準の順守は、建設に使用される骨材の品質を確保し、コンクリート構造物の完全性と寿命を守るために不可欠です。

Aggregate impurities can lower the quality and durability of concrete. Organic matter, such as loam in sand, can interfere with cement hydration and weaken the bond between the aggregate and the cement paste.

Organic impurities are often checked with a colorimetric test. In this test, the darkness of the solution after agitation shows the level of organic content. Clay and fine material can also coat aggregate particles and reduce the bond with the cement paste.

The amount of clay and silt in aggregate is commonly measured by sedimentation or wet-sieve methods. Salts from marine environments are another concern, especially when they exceed 6% by mass. These salts can cause corrosion in steel reinforcement inside concrete, so washing aggregates with fresh water is recommended to lower the salt content.

Some aggregates contain unsound particles such as shale, coal, or mica. These materials may be non-durable or absorb water and can lead to concrete damage over time. ASTM C 33-03 sets limits for these particles, so testing and following standards help protect the strength and service life of concrete structures.
