Euryarchaeota is a major phylum of Archaea, a domain of single-celled microorganisms. Archaea are grouped into five major phyla based on genetic and biochemical traits: Euryarchaeota, Crenarchaeota, Thaumarchaeota, Korarchaeota, and Nanoarchaeota. Among them, Euryarchaeota stands out for its wide range of shapes, metabolism, and habitat use.

Members of this phylum can have rod or cocci shapes. Their metabolism may be strictly aerobic or strictly anaerobic, which lets them live in both oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor settings. Euryarchaeota includes three main groups: methanogens, halophiles, and thermophiles. Each group is adapted to a different kind of extreme environment.

Methanogens are strict anaerobes that make methane through methanogenesis. This process converts carbon dioxide and acetate into methane and plays an important part in the global carbon cycle. Methanobacterium species are examples of this group. They are found in wetlands, in the digestive tracts of ruminants, and in hydrothermal vents.

One notable methanogen is Methanopyrus kandleri. It is hyperthermophilic, which means it thrives at very high temperatures. It lives in hydrothermal vents and can grow at temperatures as high as 122°C. This makes it one of the most heat-tolerant organisms known.

Halophiles are salt-loving archaea that live in environments with different salinity levels. Slight halophiles grow in 3–5% salt, such as seawater. Moderate halophiles prefer 5–20% salt, like saline lakes. Extreme halophiles, such as Halobacterium salinarum, can survive in up to 30% salt in salt flats and evaporation ponds.

These salt-tolerant archaea use specialized proteins and membranes to handle osmotic stress, which is the pressure caused by water moving because of salt levels. Their adaptations help them live in hypersaline ecosystems where most organisms cannot survive. They also contribute to nutrient cycling and help support ecosystem stability in these habitats.

Thermophiles are heat-resistant archaea that grow across a wide temperature range. Slight thermophiles grow at 41–60°C, such as those found in compost heaps. Moderate thermophiles prefer 61–80°C and are found in geothermal springs. Extreme thermophiles, like Pyrolobus fumarii, survive at 80–121°C in hydrothermal vents.

Thermophiles and hyperthermophiles in Euryarchaeota are important for their thermostable enzymes, which stay active at high temperatures. Thermococcus species, for example, grow best above 41°C. These organisms provide enzymes such as Pfu DNA polymerase, which is used in PCR, and amylases, which are used in biofuel production.

Euryarchaeota are important for biogeochemical cycles because they help recycle carbon and nutrients. Studying these archaea also helps scientists think about early Earth conditions and the possibility of life on other planets. Their extreme adaptations and industrial uses make them an important focus in biology.
