何世紀にもわたるニワトリを利用した発生学研究により脊椎動物の発生に関する理解は大きく進展しました。ニワトリは世界中で飼育されているので、簡単かつ低コストでその胚を入手できます。さらに、親鳥の体外で胚発生が進むため物理的処置や遺伝子操作に適しており、発生プロセスの詳細を調べることが可能となります。これから、ニワトリの生殖、鶏卵の構造、胚発生の基本とこの発生システムを活用して行う実験テクニックを紹介していきます。
