Metal Nanocomposites

Metal nanocomposites are materials that combine a metal or metal nanoparticle phase with a surrounding matrix to produce properties that neither component provides alone. At the nanoscale, the high surface area and strong interface between the metal and matrix can alter mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, optical response, thermal behavior, or antimicrobial activity, depending on composition and structure. In bioengineering, researchers incorporate metals such as gold, silver, or iron into polymers, ceramics, and hydrogels for biosensors, drug-delivery systems, imaging platforms, antimicrobial coatings, and tissue-engineering scaffolds. Their tunable properties support more sensitive detection, controlled therapeutic functions, and biomaterials designed for specific biological environments.

We demonstrate the preparation of siloxane-based and epoxy-based liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and LCE nanocomposites. The LCEs are characterized with respect to reversible strain, liquid crystal ordering, and stiffness. As a potential application, we demonstrate their use as shape-responsive substrates in a custom device for active cell culture.

Here we present a protocol to synthesize novel, high-aspect ratio biocomposites under biological conditions and in liquid media. The biocomposites scale from nanometers to micrometers in diameter and length, respectively. Copper nanoparticles (CNPs) and copper sulfate combined with cystine are the key components for the synthesis.

Source: Corey Burns, Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Paddlewheel complexes are a class of compounds comprised of two metal ions (1st, 2nd, or 3rd row transition metals) held in proximity by four bridging ligands (most commonly formamidinates or carboxylates) (Figure 1). Varying the identity of the metal ion and the bridging ligand provides access to large families of paddlewheel complexes. The structure of paddlewheel complexes allows for metal-metal bonding,...

Group 1 elements are soft and shiny metallic solids. They are malleable, ductile, and good conductors of heat and electricity. The melting points of the alkali metals are unusually low for metals and decrease going down the group, while the density increases going down the group with the exception of potassium (Table 1). Table 1: Properties of the alkali metals Element Electron Configuration Atomic Radius (pm) IE1 (kJ/mol) Melting Point (°C) Density at 25 °C (g/cm3)
