Invasive Phenotype Assessment

Invasive phenotype assessment is the evaluation of a cell’s ability to move through surrounding extracellular matrix, a key feature of tumor progression and other tissue-remodeling processes. In common in vitro assays, cells are placed in an upper chamber separated from a lower chamber by a porous membrane coated with an extracellular-matrix barrier; invasive cells degrade or traverse this barrier in response to a chemoattractant, then are quantified after staining. These measurements help compare metastatic potential, examine how genes or treatments regulate invasion, and distinguish matrix penetration from simple cell migration. The approach supports cancer biology, drug screening, and studies of cell-matrix interactions.

The exposed normal ocular surface consists of cornea and conjunctiva. Epithelial cells, goblet cells and immune cells are present in the conjunctiva. Here, a non-invasive, technique of impression cytology is described using an impression cytology device and flow cytometry to analyze immune cells in the conjunctiva.

The present protocol aims at assessing cognitive-emotional functions in the basal ganglia by simultaneous neurophysiological recording of local field potentials and non-invasive brain cortical activity (EEG). The procedure is exemplified by the use of paradigms involving speech stimuli with emotional connotation or the Flanker task involving cognitive control.

A Non-invasive and Technically Non-intensive Method for Induction and Phenotyping of Experimental Bacterial Pneumonia in Mice

Several methods have been described in the literature for modeling bacterial pneumonia in mice. Herein, we describe a non-invasive, inexpensive, rapid method for inducing pneumonia via aspiration (i.e., inhalation) of a bacterial inoculum pipetted into the oropharynx. Downstream methods for assessment of the pulmonary innate immune response are also detailed.

Non-invasive Assessment of Changes in Corticomotoneuronal Transmission in Humans

The aim of the present study was to assess changes in transmission at the corticomotoneuronal synapses in humans after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. For this purpose, an electrophysiological method is introduced that allows assessment of pathway specific corticospinal transmission, i.e. differentiation of fast, direct corticospinal pathways from polysynaptic connections.
