Mortality Assessment Protocol

A mortality assessment protocol is a standardized procedure for determining and recording whether organisms, cells, or biological samples remain alive under defined experimental conditions. It applies predetermined endpoints, such as loss of movement, structural damage, or failure of viability indicators, and uses consistent observation times and scoring criteria to distinguish mortality from temporary stress or injury. In biological techniques, these protocols support toxicity testing, treatment evaluation, disease and infection studies, and experimental quality control. Consistent assessment improves reproducibility, enables quantitative comparisons among groups, and helps researchers interpret survival outcomes while reducing ambiguity in biological measurements.

Assessing Pathogenic Bacteria–Induced Mortality in C. elegans Larvae

Source: Anderson, Q. L., et al. A High-throughput, High-content, Liquid-based C. elegans Pathosystem. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)The video demonstrates a liquid-based assay where genetically modified C. elegans larvae are exposed to pathogenic bacteria in a microplate. Bacterial toxins secreted into the medium induce host stress and death. A fluorescent dye stains dead worms, allowing imaging-based quantification of mortality to assess genetic susceptibility or resistance.

A Low Mortality Rat Model to Assess Delayed Cerebral Vasospasm After Experimental Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is bleeding that occurs into the subarachnoid space when an aneurysm ruptures. While the morbidity and mortality from this event has been on a decline due to improved treatment approaches, the risk of vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage continues to be the same as it was several years ago. The importance of establishing a comprehensive and reproducible animal model to identify initiating events of cerebral vasospasm has been the focus of research...

Mosquito Feeding Assay: A Method to Evaluate Test Compound Effects on Mortality and Fecundity of Adult Female Mosquitoes

2025

This video demonstrates a blood-feeding assay to evaluate the mortality and fecundity of test compounds with novel modes of action on female mosquitoes. This technique helps in screening new classes of insecticides to kill the resistant population of mosquitoes and control disease spread.
