Minimum Bushnell Haas Medium

Minimum Bushnell Haas Medium is a defined mineral-salts culture medium used to assess whether microorganisms can grow by using hydrocarbons as their carbon and energy source. It supplies essential inorganic nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphate, magnesium, calcium, and iron, while omitting readily available organic carbon, so growth indicates utilization of a separately added hydrocarbon substrate. Researchers use the medium to screen environmental isolates for petroleum degradation, compare hydrocarbon biodegradation under controlled conditions, and evaluate microbial activity in contaminated-environment studies. Its selective composition helps distinguish true hydrocarbon use from growth supported by other nutrients.

Local Maximum and Minimum Values

2026

In multivariable calculus, a function of two variables can exhibit local maximum or minimum values at certain points on its surface. A local maximum occurs when the function's value at a point is greater than at all nearby points, while a local minimum occurs when the function’s value is less than at all nearby locations. These points are referred to as local extrema and are of central importance in optimization problems.Local extrema are found at critical points, where the surface becomes...

This method eliminates any major invasion during cell injections caused by the cell suspension solution.

Minimum Burning Pressures of Water-based Emulsion Explosives

2017

We present an apparatus based on hot-wire ignition in a pressurized enclosure and an associated methodology to measure the minimum pressure required to induce sustained combustion in water-based emulsion explosives. This method improves product characterization to allow one to use them more safely during pumping and mixing operations.

A Microtiter Plate Method to Assess the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of an Antibiotic

2025

This video demonstrates a microtiter plate-based method for determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of test antibiotics against bacteria. Upon adding a suspension of the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa to a microtiter plate containing serial dilutions of a test antibiotic, and an inhibitor of the production of pyomelanin by the bacteria, the optical density of the wells is measured to compute the minimum inhibitory concentration of the antibiotic, and the impact of the...
