Salmonella Detection

Salmonella detection is the process of identifying Salmonella bacteria in food, water, environmental, or clinical samples, helping prevent transmission of foodborne disease and support diagnosis. Detection commonly begins with sample preparation and selective enrichment, which increases Salmonella numbers while suppressing competing microorganisms; laboratories then use selective culture, biochemical testing, immunoassays, or nucleic-acid amplification such as PCR to confirm the organism. These approaches differ in speed, sensitivity, and ability to distinguish viable cells, so methods may be combined for reliable results. In biology and public health, Salmonella detection supports outbreak investigation, food-safety monitoring, treatment decisions, and evaluation of contamination-control measures.

A protocol involving integrated concentration, enrichment, and end-point colorimetric detection of foodborne pathogens in large volumes of agricultural water is presented here. Water is filtered through Modified Moore Swabs (MMS), enriched with selective or non-selective media, and detection is performed using paper-based analytical devices (µPAD) imbedded with bacterial-indicative colorimetric substrates.
