Ethanol Ablation

Ethanol ablation is a minimally invasive treatment that destroys targeted tissue by injecting concentrated ethanol directly into a lesion, making it useful when surgery is unsuitable or unnecessary. Ethanol disrupts cell membranes, extracts lipids, denatures proteins, and causes dehydration and coagulative necrosis; damage to small blood vessels can further limit the lesion’s blood supply. In cancer research and clinical oncology, image-guided ethanol ablation has been applied most often to selected liver tumors and other localized malignancies. Researchers evaluate injection volume, ethanol distribution, treatment response, and recurrence to improve precision and clarify when this approach can complement surgery, thermal ablation, or systemic therapy.

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) with an ablation catheter is a curative treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF). Robotic catheter systems aim to improve catheter steerability. Here, a procedure with a new robotic catheter system is presented. The goal of the procedure is electrical block between pulmonary vein and left atrium.

A procedure for the delivery of a chemical ablative solution to the rat mammary ductal tree for image-guided preventive treatment of breast cancer is described. Mammary epithelial cells can be targeted with minimal collateral tissue damage through cannulation directly into the nipple opening and intraductal infusion of a 70% ethanol-based ablative solution.

Source: Muto, A., et al. Ablation of a Neuronal Population Using a Two-photon Laser and Its Assessment Using Calcium Imaging and Behavioral Recording in Zebrafish Larvae. J. Vis. Exp. (2018) In this video, a two-photon laser ablation procedure is demonstrated, enabling the selective destruction of fluorescent neurons in agarose-immobilized zebrafish larvae. High-resolution imaging before and after the procedure confirms efficient neuronal damage, as observed by the absence of fluorescence.
