Lock And Key Model

The lock and key model is a scientific concept that explains how molecules recognize and bind to one another through complementary shapes and chemical properties. In chemistry, it describes an enzyme’s active site as a relatively rigid binding region whose size, shape, and functional groups match a specific substrate, allowing noncovalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding, ionic attraction, and hydrophobic forces to stabilize the complex. This model helps explain enzyme specificity and selective molecular recognition in biochemical reactions. Although the induced-fit model provides a more flexible view of binding, the lock and key model remains useful for understanding drug design, catalyst function, and structure–activity relationships.

Self-Locking Screw

2023

A square-threaded screw jack is a mechanical device widely used for lifting heavy loads or applying considerable force. One of the key features that can make a screw jack more effective and reliable is its self-locking capability. A square-threaded screw jack carrying a load is considered self-locking if the screw retains its position even after the moment applied to it is removed. This occurs when the frictional force direction reverses, and the reaction force acts on the other side of the...

Tree Identification: How To Use a Dichotomous Key

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University A dichotomous key is a tool that identifies items in nature, such as leaves. This method is based on the idea of choosing between two characteristics. The word dichotomous comes from two Greek words that mean “to divide into two parts.” In a dichotomous key for leaf identification, each pair of phrases describes different features of the leaf. Only one of the phrases correctly applies to the leaf being keyed out. The...

Key Elements for Plant Nutrition

2026

Like all living organisms, plants require organic and inorganic nutrients to survive, reproduce, grow and maintain homeostasis. To identify nutrients that are essential for plant functioning, researchers have leveraged a technique called hydroponics. In hydroponic culture systems, plants are grown—without soil—in water-based solutions containing nutrients. At least 17 nutrients have been identified as essential elements required by plants. Plants acquire these elements from the atmosphere, the...
