Oleylamine Synthesis

Oleylamine synthesis is the chemical preparation of oleylamine, a long-chain primary amine valued for its amphiphilic behavior and reactive nitrogen group. In typical routes, an unsaturated C18 fatty-acid derivative is converted to an amide or nitrile and then reduced to the corresponding amine, while reaction conditions help preserve the carbon–carbon double bond and control purity. The product functions as a surfactant, coordinating ligand, and reducing or capping agent in inorganic and materials chemistry. Its synthesis therefore supports the preparation of metal nanoparticles, semiconductor nanocrystals, and other systems in which surface chemistry influences particle growth, dispersion, and stability.

Source: Amber N. Barron, Ashlea Patterson, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Hydrogels are a versatile class of cross-linked polymers produced through relatively simple procedures and with generally inexpensive materials. They can be formed from solution and involve a polymer backbone formed from monomer reagents, an initiator which makes the polymer reactive and a crosslinking species which binds the polymer chains...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Diane Le, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Merrifield's solid-phase synthesis is a Nobel Prize winning invention where a reactant molecule is bound on a solid support and undergoes successive chemical reactions to form a desired compound. When the molecules are bound to a solid support, excess reagents and byproducts can be removed by washing away the impurities, while the target compound remains bound to the resin. Specifically, we will...

Synthesis and Decomposition Reactions

2020

Synthesis and decomposition are two types of redox reactions. Synthesis means to make something, whereas decomposition means to break something. The reactions are accompanied by chemical and energy changes. Synthesis Reactions Synthesis reactions are also called combination reactions. It is a reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a complex substance. Synthesis reactions are generally represented as: A + B → AB or A + B → C. The formation of nitrogen dioxide is a synthesis...
