Ecg Gating

ECG gating is an imaging synchronization technique that uses the heart’s electrical activity to coordinate data acquisition with specific phases of the cardiac cycle. Electrodes record the electrocardiogram, and the imaging system uses detected R waves to trigger or retrospectively sort measurements, reducing motion-related blurring and enabling phase-specific visualization. In clinical computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear cardiology, ECG gating helps assess cardiac anatomy, ventricular function, coronary arteries, and moving structures such as valves. The approach can improve temporal resolution and diagnostic confidence, although irregular heart rhythms and elevated heart rates may reduce image quality or complicate interpretation.

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut An electrocardiograph is a graph recorded by electric potential changes occurring between electrodes placed on a patient's torso to demonstrate cardiac activity. An ECG signal tracks heart rhythm and many cardiac diseases, such as poor blood flow to the heart and structural abnormalities. The action potential created by contractions of the heart wall...

An electrocardiogram (ECG)graphically represents the heart's electrical activity on ECG paper or a monitor. Components of the Electrocardiogram The primary components of a normal ECG waveform in Normal sinus rhythm(NSR) include the P wave, PR interval, QRS complex, ST segment, T wave, and occasionally a U wave. ECG waveforms are divided by vertical and horizontal lines at standard intervals. The horizontal axis measures time and rate, and the vertical axis measures amplitude or voltage. When...
