N-acetylcysteine

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a medication and cysteine-containing compound used clinically as a mucolytic agent and antidote, particularly because it helps restore the body’s antioxidant defenses. It breaks disulfide bonds in respiratory mucus, reducing its viscosity, and supplies cysteine for glutathione synthesis; in acetaminophen overdose, replenished glutathione helps neutralize the toxic metabolite NAPQI and limit liver injury. NAC is therefore used in emergency medicine, respiratory care, and selected conditions involving oxidative stress or impaired mucus clearance. Its diverse mechanisms make it an important model for connecting biochemical pathways with practical therapeutic outcomes.

Current treatments of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) aim at alleviating disease symptoms but may cause severe side effects. Thus, alternative strategies are being investigated in animal colitis models. Here, we explain how the beneficial effects of diet supplements on clinical IBD signs are analyzed in such a colitis model.

Efficient generation of nonlinear phenomena related to third order optical non-linear susceptibility Χ(3) interactions in triply resonant silica microspheres is presented in this paper. The interactions here reported are: Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS), and four wave mixing processes comprising Stimulated Anti-stokes Raman Scattering (SARS).

In Vitro Gut Model to Assess Bacterial Adhesion and Internalization

Source: Calatayud Arroyo, M., et al. Assessing the Viability of a Synthetic Bacterial Consortium on the In Vitro Gut Host-microbe Interface. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates an in vitro gut host–microbe model to study bacterial viability. A co-culture of Caco-2 and HT29-MTX cells is incubated with bacteria pre-treated under simulated digestive conditions. Epithelial barrier integrity is assessed using transepithelial electrical resistance, and fractions from the medium, solubilized...
