Pelvic Examination

A pelvic examination is a clinical assessment of the female reproductive and lower genital tract, used to evaluate symptoms, monitor health, and identify abnormalities. The clinician typically inspects the external genitalia, uses a speculum to visualize the vagina and cervix, and performs a bimanual examination to assess the uterus and adnexa through palpation. Depending on the clinical question, the examination may guide specimen collection for infection or cervical screening and help investigate pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, discharge, or structural changes. When combined with patient history and other tests, it supports diagnosis, preventive care, and informed clinical management.
