Geometric Similarity

Geometric similarity is the condition in which two objects or systems have the same shape, with all corresponding lengths related by a constant scale factor, making it a foundation of engineering design and model testing. It works by preserving corresponding angles and dimensional ratios, so a prototype and its scaled model maintain the same spatial proportions even when their absolute sizes differ. Engineers use geometric similarity to create physical models, interpret measurements, and transfer design features across scales, including structures, mechanisms, and fluid-system geometries. Combined with kinematic and dynamic similarity, it supports reliable predictions of prototype performance while reducing development time, material use, and testing costs.

Geometric Mean

2023

The mean is a measure of the central tendency of a data set. In some data sets, the data is inherently multiplicative, and the arithmetic mean is not useful. For example, the human population multiplies with time, and so does the credit amount of financial investment, as the interest compounds over successive time intervals. In cases of multiplicative data, the geometric mean is used for statistical analysis. First, the product of all the elements is taken. Then, if there are n elements in the...

Geometric Sequences

In systems where values diminish by a constant proportion at each stage, the resulting sequence follows a geometric structure. Each new value in the sequence is obtained by applying a fixed multiplier to the preceding term. This regular, proportional decline type is often used to represent processes involving gradual loss, such as energy dissipation or reduction in amplitude over time. When analyzing the total effect of such a process across unlimited iterations, the series of values is referred...

Causes of Similarity-Dissimilarity Effect

The similarity-dissimilarity effect, a fundamental concept in social psychology, explains how interpersonal similarities and differences influence attraction and social interactions. This effect is supported by three key psychological perspectives: balance theory, social comparison theory, and consensual validation.Balance Theory and Cognitive ConsistencyBalance theory, developed by Fritz Heider, posits that individuals seek cognitive consistency in their relationships. When two people share...

Factors Influencing Attraction III: Similarity

2025

The similarity hypothesis suggests that individuals are more likely to form relationships with others who share similar attitudes, beliefs, values, and interests. This concept has been widely studied in social psychology, demonstrating that perceived similarity fosters interpersonal attraction. In an experiment supporting this hypothesis, participants were presented with fabricated information indicating that strangers held attitudes similar to their own. The results showed that participants...
