Gold Films

Gold films are thin layers of gold deposited on a solid substrate, valued for their electrical conductivity, chemical stability, reflectivity, and nanoscale optical behavior. Their properties depend on film thickness, surface structure, and fabrication method, such as physical vapor deposition, sputtering, or evaporation; at suitable interfaces, free electrons can collectively oscillate with incident light to produce surface plasmon resonance. In engineering, gold films serve as conductive contacts, corrosion-resistant coatings, optical components, and sensing surfaces. These films support technologies including microfabrication, biosensors, photonic devices, and electrochemical systems, where controlled deposition and characterization determine performance, adhesion, and long-term reliability.

Here, we present a protocol for the in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) within the interlayer space of layered titanate films without the aggregation of AuNPs. No spectral change was observed even after 4 months. The synthesized material has expected applications in catalysis, photo-catalysis, and the development of cost-effective plasmonic devices.

Source: Logan G. Kiefer, Andrew R. Falkowski, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...
