Hyaluronic Acid Solutions

Hyaluronic acid solutions are aqueous formulations of a naturally occurring, biocompatible polysaccharide that binds water and provides tunable viscosity, making them important materials in biomedical engineering. Their behavior depends on factors such as polymer concentration, molecular weight, hydration, and solution conditions, which influence flow, viscoelasticity, and gel formation. Engineers adjust these properties to design injectable biomaterials, drug-delivery systems, tissue-engineering scaffolds, and lubricating formulations. Because hyaluronic acid can support cell-compatible environments while degrading in the body, its solutions help bridge material design with regenerative medicine and controlled therapeutic delivery.

Weak Acid Solutions

2020

Few compounds act as strong acids. A far greater number of compounds behave as weak acids and only partially react with water, leaving a large majority of dissolved molecules in their original form and generating a relatively small amount of hydronium ions. Weak acids are commonly encountered in nature, being the substances partly responsible for the tangy taste of citrus fruits, the stinging sensation of insect bites, and the unpleasant smells associated with body odor. A familiar example of a...

Strong Acid and Base Solutions

A strong acid is a compound that dissociates completely in an aqueous solution and produces a concentration of hydronium ions equal to the initial concentration of acid. For example, 0.20 M hydrobromic acid will dissociate completely in water and produces 0.20 M of hydronium ions and 0.20 M of bromide ions. On the other hand, a strong base is a compound that dissociates completely in an aqueous solution and produces hydroxide ions. For example, 0.015 M KOH, a group 1 metal hydroxide, will...

Leveling Effect and Non-Aqueous Acid-Base Solutions

This lesson defines the leveling effect in acidic and basic solutions and its role in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions. It is essential to understand the competing nature of various species in a chemical system. The Leveling Effect of a Solvent A generic acid (HA) reacts with the generic base (B-) to yield the corresponding conjugate base (A-) and conjugate acid (HB): Figure 1: A generic acid-base reaction However, if the reaction takes place in a solvent (HX), the solvent can also...
