Memory Subsets Analysis

Memory subsets analysis is the identification and comparison of long-lived immune-cell populations that retain information from prior antigen exposure, helping researchers understand durable protection and immune dysfunction. In immunology and infection research, investigators distinguish subsets such as central memory, effector memory, and tissue-resident memory cells by combining surface-marker profiles with functional measurements, often using multiparameter flow cytometry; these features reflect differences in trafficking, proliferation, cytokine production, and tissue localization. The approach reveals how infections and vaccines shape cellular immunity, supports evaluation of immune protection and exhaustion, and guides studies of reinfection, chronic disease, and vaccine design.

Memory Development: Demonstrating How Repeated Questioning Leads to False Memories

2023

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville A person is defined as a unique individual based on the people and events they encounter in their lives. Thus, creating, storing, and recalling memories are essential elements of the human experience. However, memory, as adults experience it, takes time to develop. Although young children can learn facts and remember details of their lives from moment-to-moment and day-to-day, they do not create...

An Introduction to Learning and Memory

2023

Learning is the process of acquiring new information and memory is the retention or storage of that information. Different types of learning, such as non-associative and associative learning, and different types of memory, such as long-term and short-term memory, have been associated with human behaviors. Studying these components in detail helps behavioral scientists understand the neural mechanisms behind these two complex phenomena. JoVE's overview on learning and memory introduces common...

Here we present a protocol for characterizing monocyte subsets by whole blood flow cytometry. This includes outlining how to gate the subsets and assess their expression of surface markers and giving an example of the assessment of the expression of M1 (inflammatory) and M2 markers (anti-inflammatory).

2017

Working memory predicts a significant amount of variance for a variety of cognitive tasks, including speaking, reading, and writing. However, few tools are available to assess working memory in children. We present an innovative, computer-based battery that comprehensively assesses different components of working memory in school-age children.
