Standard Operating Procedures

Standard operating procedures (SOPs) are documented, step-by-step instructions that standardize how tasks are performed, recorded, and reviewed. In medicine, they define responsibilities, required materials, decision points, safety checks, and quality-control measures so clinicians and laboratory personnel follow consistent processes under specified conditions. SOPs support activities such as patient assessment, specimen handling, medication administration, sterilization, and clinical research protocols. By reducing procedural variation and clarifying responses to unexpected findings, they help promote patient safety, regulatory compliance, reliable data, and continuity of care. Regular review and controlled updates keep SOPs aligned with current evidence, technology, and institutional requirements.
