Gabaergic Transmission

GABAergic transmission is neuronal communication mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mature central nervous system. When released into a synapse, GABA activates GABA_A receptors, ligand-gated chloride channels that produce rapid inhibition, or GABA_B receptors, G protein-coupled receptors that open potassium channels and reduce calcium entry for slower, prolonged effects. By hyperpolarizing or shunting neuronal membranes, this signaling regulates excitability, timing, and the balance between excitation and inhibition in neural circuits. Its study supports research on brain development, sensory processing, sleep, epilepsy, anxiety, and medications that modify inhibitory signaling.

This video demonstrates how to employ two neural stimulants, aldicarb and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), in complementary ways to study synaptic function in the nematode, C. elegans. This complementary approach may also be used to shed light on evolutionarily conserved mechanisms for modulating neuronal synchrony and has implications for epilepsy and seizures.

Antiepileptic Drugs: GABAergic Pathway Potentiators

2024

γ-aminobutyric acid or GABA, plays a pivotal role as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. GABA pathway potentiators, also known as GABAergic drugs, are a class of pharmaceutical agents designed to enhance the functioning of the GABAergic system. These medications primarily treat epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. The key GABA pathway potentiators used in epilepsy management are as follows. Benzodiazepines are a well-known class of drugs used for their...

Transmission of Pathogens

2026

Pathogens spread from their reservoirs to susceptible hosts through three main routes: contact transmission, vehicle transmission, and vector transmission. Each route involves distinct mechanisms of transfer.Contact TransmissionThis category includes direct contact, indirect contact, and droplet transmission:Direct contact involves immediate physical interaction between individuals—such as a handshake—which can spread pathogens like Streptococcus pyogenes, the bacterium responsible for...

Non-invasive Assessment of Changes in Corticomotoneuronal Transmission in Humans

The aim of the present study was to assess changes in transmission at the corticomotoneuronal synapses in humans after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. For this purpose, an electrophysiological method is introduced that allows assessment of pathway specific corticospinal transmission, i.e. differentiation of fast, direct corticospinal pathways from polysynaptic connections.
