Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a structured psychotherapy that helps people identify and change unhelpful thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, making it important in the treatment of many mental health conditions. It works through guided self-monitoring, cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, and exposure, enabling patients to test beliefs and develop more adaptive responses. In pharmacology, CBT provides a nonpharmacological framework for evaluating medication effects, managing treatment expectations, and supporting adherence. Used alone or alongside psychiatric medicines, it can clarify treatment outcomes and inform integrated care for conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders.
