Zafirlukast Accolate

Zafirlukast (Accolate) is an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist used as a controller medication for asthma, where inflammatory airway narrowing contributes to wheezing and reduced airflow. It selectively blocks cysteinyl leukotriene CysLT1 receptors, limiting the effects of leukotrienes such as LTD4 and LTE4 on airway smooth muscle, vascular permeability, and mucus production. By reducing leukotriene-mediated bronchoconstriction and airway inflammation, zafirlukast can help prevent symptoms and improve long-term asthma control, although it is not intended to treat an acute attack. Its pharmacology illustrates how targeted receptor antagonism can modify inflammatory signaling in respiratory disease.
