Postoperative Urinary Retention

Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is the temporary inability to empty the bladder after surgery, a common complication that can cause discomfort, bladder overdistension, catheter use, and extended care. It develops when anesthesia, opioids, pain, fluid administration, and surgical stress disrupt coordinated detrusor contraction, bladder sensation, or urethral relaxation. In pharmacology, understanding these mechanisms helps researchers and clinicians evaluate how analgesics, anesthetic agents, alpha-adrenergic drugs, and cholinergic therapies influence urinary function and retention risk. Assessment with bladder scanning and timely catheterization support management, while research on medication selection and multimodal perioperative care aims to reduce recurrence, infection risk, and unnecessary catheter exposure.

Determination of the Calcium Retention Capacity of Isolated Mitochondria

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure to assess mitochondrial calcium retention capacity by monitoring real-time changes in fluorescence as mitochondria uptake calcium. This assay is useful for studying mitochondrial function and calcium-related processes, including apoptosis and neurodegenerative diseases.

2025

In this video, we describe the technique for the intravesical administration of uropathogenic bacteria to generate a urinary tract infection model in mice. This model can be used to understand the spread of uropathogenic bacterial infection within the urinary system and the mechanisms that determine UTI susceptibility.

Soil Core Sample Collection for Water Retention Property Analysis

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.
