Decision Making Conflict

Decision-making conflict is the psychological tension that arises when a person must choose between competing options, goals, values, or potential outcomes. It occurs when evaluating alternatives activates opposing preferences, creating uncertainty, hesitation, emotional strain, or difficulty committing to a choice. Psychologists study how people resolve this conflict by weighing perceived benefits and costs, managing emotions, seeking information, and using strategies such as prioritization or deliberate comparison. Understanding decision-making conflict helps explain choices in personal, social, clinical, and organizational settings, while research on the process can inform interventions that improve judgment, reduce indecision, and support choices aligned with an individual’s goals.
