SHE는 섭씨 25 도에서 작동하며 1 몰의 염산에 부분적으로 잠겨 있고 1 기압에서 수소 기체 흐름에 노출되는 불활성 백금 전극으로 구성됩니다. 아연 전극을 SHE에 연결하면 아연 전극은 질량이 감소하여 Zn2+이온으로 산화된다는 것을 나타냅니다. 동시에 수소 기체가 증가하면 수소 이온의 감소를 의미합니다.

따라서 아연은 양극이고, SHE는 음극입니다. 아연은 표준 전극 전위가 0.76 볼트로 SHE보다 산화 전위가 더 크다는 것을 나타냅니다. 그러나 SHE에 구리 전극을 연결하면 구리 이온이 구리로 환원됨에 따라 그 질량은 증가합니다.

따라서, 구리는 음극이고, SHE는 양극입니다. 구리의 표준 환원 전위는 0.34 볼트로 SHE보다 더 큰 환원 전위를 나타냅니다. 표준 전극 전위를 통해 발생하는 산화 또는 환원을 측정할 수 있습니다.

양극을 띨수록 표준 조건에서 환원 경향은 커집니다. 산화환원 반응의 방향과 자발성은 개별 표준 전극의 전위를 검사하여 결정됩니다. 전극 전위의 양의 합은 자발적인 반응을 의미합니다.

따라서 아연을 양극으로, 구리를 음극으로 하며 전지 전위가 1.10 볼트인 구리-아연 갈바닉 전지에 대해 두 개의 반전지 반응은 모두 정방향에서 자발적으로 일어납니다. 마지막으로 표준 전극 전위는 고유한 성질을 가지며 반응 화학당량 변화의 영향을 받지 않습니다.

자발성 예측 및 산화환원 반응 방향

셀과 전극 전위는 산화환원 반응의 자발성을 결정합니다. 자발적 반응은 양성 세포 전위를 나타내는 반면 비자발적 반응은 음성 세포 전위를 나타내는 것으로 관찰됩니다. 전극 전위의 합이 양수이면 반응이 자발적이라고 합니다. 양극 전위를 갖는 반쪽 전지 반응은 순방향으로 발생하는 반면, 수소 전극보다 낮은 값을 갖는 반쪽 전지 반응은 일반적으로 역순으로 발생합니다.

더 강한 산화제는 더 큰 표준 전극 전위 E°를 나타냅니다. 전극 전위가 환원 용량을 측정함에 따라 증가된 E°는 종의 환원과 더 나은 산화 능력을 뒷받침하는 추진력의 증가에 해당합니다. 따라서 E°_음극 > E°_양극일 때 E°_셀은 양성입니다.

이를 고려하면 구리가 은에 의해 산화되고 납에 의해 산화되지 않는 이유를 설명합니다.

Standard Electrode Potentials

Electrode potentials help predict whether a redox reaction will happen on its own. A redox reaction involves electron transfer. In electrochemistry, the measured value is called cell potential or cell voltage. It shows the energy linked to charge transfer and is measured in volts, where 1 volt equals 1 joule per coulomb.

A single half-cell cannot be measured by itself because electron transfer needs both a donor and a receiver. For that reason, scientists measure the difference between two half-cells. The cell potential, Ecell, is defined from the cathode and anode potentials, and the standard cell potential, E°cell, is taken under standard conditions of 1 M concentration, 1 bar pressure, and 298 K.

To compare half-cells, chemistry uses the standard hydrogen electrode, or SHE, as a zero-volt reference. The SHE uses an inert platinum electrode in 1 M aqueous H+ with hydrogen gas bubbling at 1 bar and 298 K. A half-cell X is measured against the SHE when X acts as the cathode. Under standard conditions, this gives the standard electrode potential, E°X. These values are also called standard reduction potentials because the half-cell is written as a reduction.

The sign of the potential helps show the direction of a redox reaction. A spontaneous reaction has a positive cell potential, while a nonspontaneous one has a negative cell potential. When the sum of the electrode potentials is positive, the reaction is spontaneous. Half-cell reactions with positive electrode potential tend to go forward, and reactions with values below the hydrogen electrode usually go in reverse. A stronger oxidant has a larger standard electrode potential because it has a greater drive to gain electrons.

This idea explains why silver ions and lead ions behave differently toward copper. Silver ion, Ag+ (aq), is reduced spontaneously, but lead ion, Pb2+ (aq), is not. It also helps explain metal dissolution in mineral acids such as hydrochloric acid. These acids dissolve metals by reducing protons to hydrogen gas and oxidizing the metal to its ions. Zinc reacts spontaneously with hydrochloric acid because its standard electrode potential is lower than hydrogen’s, while copper does not react because its electrode potential is higher.
