Lymphatic capillaries are thin-walled vessels closed at one end, interspersed with blood capillaries in loose connective tissue. They feature larger diameters, thinner walls, and overlapping endothelial cells that form one-way valves. This valve system allows fluids, solutes, and pathogens to enter but prevents their return to intercellular spaces, ensuring unidirectional lymph flow.

Superficial lymphatics are located deep in the skin and areolar tissues of various membranes, while deep lymphatics accompany deep arteries and veins, serving muscles and other organs. Both vessel types collect lymph from their respective tissue regions and converge to form larger lymphatic trunks that eventually drain into the thoracic and right lymphatic ducts.

The thoracic duct drains lymph from all organs below the diaphragm and the left side above the diaphragm, originating as cisterna chyli anterior to the vertebral column. The right lymphatic duct, formed by convergence of the right jugular, subclavian, and bronchomediastinal trunks, drains only the right side of the body above the diaphragm. Both ducts ultimately empty into the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins.

Lacteals are specialized lymphatic capillaries found in the small intestine that transport absorbed lipids from digestion. These important vessels represent a key example of lymphatic capillaries present in almost all organs, demonstrating how the lymphatic system supports nutrient absorption and distribution throughout the body.

Lymph begins in thin-walled lymphatic capillaries and drains into superficial and deep lymphatic vessels, which merge to form larger trunks. These trunks converge into the thoracic and right lymphatic ducts, which empty into the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins, reintroducing lymph into the venous circulation and completing the essential lymph transport cycle.

The thoracic duct originates as cisterna chyli, fed by the right and left lumbar and intestinal trunks. As it ascends posteriorly through the body, it receives additional lymph from the left bronchomediastinal, subclavian, and jugular trunks before emptying into the venous system at the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins.

The one-way valve system formed by overlapping endothelial cells allows pathogens and immune cells to enter lymphatic capillaries but prevents their return to intercellular spaces. This directional flow ensures that pathogens and antigens are transported to lymph nodes where immune surveillance by NK cells and phagocytes can occur, supporting the body's defense mechanisms.
