Lymphoid organs consist of two major components: lymphoid cells and lymphoid tissues. Lymphoid cells include B and T lymphocytes, dendritic cells, macrophages, and fibroblast-like reticular cells that produce supporting stroma. Lymphoid tissues are connective tissues housing lymphocytes and providing sites for their proliferation and maturation.

Diffuse lymphoid tissues are loosely packed arrangements of lymphoid cells and reticular fibers scattered throughout the body. Solid lymphoid tissues form densely packed, egg-shaped structures called nodules or follicles. Both types house lymphocytes, but their organization and density differ significantly, affecting their immune function.

Dendritic cells and macrophages are key immune cells within lymphoid tissues. Dendritic cells act as messengers between innate and adaptive immunity, while macrophages detect, engulf, and destroy pathogens and apoptotic cells. Together, they support immune surveillance by nk cells and phagocytes within lymphoid tissues.

Mucosa-associated lymphatic tissue (MALT) is scattered around mucus membranes lining the respiratory, digestive, reproductive, and urinary systems. These lymphoid nodules are strategically positioned to prevent microbe entry at body surfaces most exposed to pathogens, providing a first line of immune defense.

Tonsils and Peyer's patches are aggregated clusters of mucosa-associated lymphatic tissue (MALT). Tonsils are located in the pharynx walls, while Peyer's patches are found in the intestinal wall. These aggregated nodules serve as frontline immune structures, strategically positioned to intercept pathogens before they enter the body.

B and T lymphocytes are primary immune cells within lymphoid tissues. B lymphocytes produce antibodies against pathogens, while T lymphocytes kill infected cells. Lymphoid tissues provide the environment for their proliferation and maturation, enabling cells of the adaptive immune response to develop and respond effectively.

Fibroblast-like reticular cells produce the supporting stroma that forms the structural backbone of lymphoid organs. These cells create the connective tissue framework within lymphoid tissues, providing a supportive environment for lymphocytes and other immune cells to proliferate, mature, and function effectively.
