Buccal Osteotomy

Buccal osteotomy is a surgical procedure that cuts or removes bone on the cheek-facing surface of the jaw, creating controlled access or a standardized osseous defect. A clinician or researcher uses an osteotomy instrument to section the buccal cortical plate while preserving defined surrounding structures, after which healing proceeds through inflammation, new bone formation, and remodeling. In bioengineering, buccal osteotomy provides a reproducible model for evaluating bone-regeneration strategies, including biomaterials, scaffolds, implants, and biologically active treatments. Measurements of defect closure, tissue integration, and mechanical stability help assess how engineered therapies support jawbone repair and guide the development of oral and maxillofacial interventions.

In the present protocol, a urethral stricture induction was developed in Wistar rats, followed by urethral reconstruction with a buccal mucosa graft. A retrograde urethrogram and laser Doppler assessment were performed, validating urethral reconstruction (after stricture formation) and graft placement.

One constraint of preclinical research in the field of bone repair is the lack of experimental control over the local mechanical environment within a healing bone lesion. We report the design and use of an external fixator for bone repair with the ability to change fixator stiffness in vivo.

Protocol for Developing a Femur Osteotomy Model in Wistar Albino Rats

2022

Here, we present a protocol to iatrogenically fracture the shaft of the femur of Wistar albino rats and follow up on the development of the callus. This femur osteotomy model can help researchers evaluate the process of fracture healing and to study how a drug could influence fracture healing.

Stabilizing a Femur Osteotomy with a Plate Fixation in Ambystoma mexicanum
