Porcine Heart Decellularization

Porcine heart decellularization is a bioengineering process that removes cells and genetic material from a pig heart while preserving its three-dimensional extracellular matrix, geometry, and vascular pathways. Researchers typically perfuse detergents and enzymes through the coronary circulation to disrupt cell membranes, solubilize cellular components, and wash the tissue, while limiting damage to structural proteins such as collagen and elastin. The resulting acellular scaffold provides a biologically relevant framework for studying cardiac structure and developing tissue-engineered heart constructs. It can support research on recellularization, vascularization, biomaterial design, and regenerative strategies, although scaffold integrity, residual detergent, immune compatibility, and effective repopulation remain important challenges.
