Sodium-dependent Transport

Sodium-dependent transport is the movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane driven by the electrochemical gradient of sodium, a fundamental process in cellular physiology and biological techniques. The Na+/K+-ATPase maintains low intracellular sodium by actively exporting Na+, allowing membrane transporters to use this stored gradient for symport, in which sodium and a substrate move together, or antiport, in which sodium exchange drives movement in the opposite direction. Studying these mechanisms helps characterize membrane proteins, nutrient uptake, ion balance, and epithelial transport. Sodium-dependent transport assays also support research on drug action, disease-related transport defects, and the design of targeted delivery strategies.

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Concentration DependenceExpand In this experiment, you will combine varying concentrations of aqueous HCl and sodium thiosulfate to make solid sulfur, which rapidly gathers into opaque yellow particles at a certain sulfur concentration. Since the reaction solution starts clear and colorless, you can easily tell when it reaches that concentration. You'll use the same test tube and total volume each time, so it will take the same amount...

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Preparation of SolutionsExpand Here, we show the preparation of solutions for 10 students working in pairs, with some excess. Please adjust quantities as needed. Put on a lab coat, splash-proof safety glasses, and nitrile gloves. Obtain a waste container for aqueous sodium thiosulfate in advance. Note: HCl is toxic and highly corrosive, and sodium thiosulfate is an irritant, so the solutions for this lab must be prepared in a...

Regulation of Sodium and Potassium

2024

The regulation of sodium and potassium ion concentrations in the human body is a complex process governed primarily by hormones such as aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). Sodium Regulation Sodium ions make up approximately 90% of extracellular cations, with a normal blood plasma concentration of 136–148 mEq/L. A decrease in blood volume and pressure triggers the release of renin from granular cells in the juxtaglomerular complex (JGC), primarily in...

Transport and Acclimatization of Rodents for Research

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Transporting rodents for research requires procedures that minimize stress and maintain animal welfare during movement to minimize the influence on experimental outcomes. Transport cages should provide adequate ventilation,...
