Greenhouse Effect

The greenhouse effect is a natural process in which gases in a planet’s atmosphere retain some outgoing infrared radiation, warming the surface and lower atmosphere. Atmospheric water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and other greenhouse gases absorb infrared energy emitted by Earth’s surface and re-emit it in all directions, including back toward the surface; increasing their concentrations strengthens this heat retention. In biology, the greenhouse effect helps explain climate-driven changes in species distributions, seasonal timing, ecosystem productivity, and risks to biodiversity, while providing a foundation for studying how human-induced warming affects organisms and ecological interactions.

Climate Change - Concepts

2019

The certainty of climate change remains a public controversy despite the consensus among approximately 97% of active climate researchers, who not only agree that the Earth’s climate is changing but also state that this change is intensified by human activity, predominantly carbon emissions 1. The disconnect between the public and the experts is partly due to poor understanding of the mechanisms involved in climate change as well as the differences among essential concepts such as weather and...
