Laboratory Rats

Laboratory rats are selectively bred and carefully maintained animals used as model organisms to investigate biological processes, disease mechanisms, behavior, and responses to experimental conditions. Researchers use controlled housing, defined genetic backgrounds, standardized diets, and measured interventions to reduce variability and compare physiological, cellular, and behavioral outcomes across groups. In biology, rats support studies of neuroscience, metabolism, toxicology, reproduction, immunology, and learning because their mammalian anatomy and physiology enable observations relevant to human health. Their use also contributes to experimental design, reproducibility, and the evaluation of therapies, while requiring rigorous welfare practices and ethical oversight.

This article describes various procedures for screening rats and mice to detect endo- or ectoparasitism. Several diagnostic assays will be demonstrated, both those suitable for use on live animals and those used after euthanasia of the animal. Photographs to aid in identification of rat and mouse parasites will be included.

Animal models of relapse, known as reinstatement procedures, have been used extensively to study the role of stress in relapse to drug seeking. Here, we report on a method for inducing the reinstatement of cocaine seeking in laboratory rats via acute exposures to mild, intermittent electric footshock.

Three Laboratory Procedures for Assessing Different Manifestations of Impulsivity in Rats

2019

We present three protocols that assess different forms of impulsivity in rats and other small mammals. Intertemporal choice procedures evaluate the tendency to discount the value of delayed outcomes. Differential reinforcement of low rates and feature-negative discrimination evaluate response inhibition capacity with and without punishment for inappropriate responses, respectively.

A Laboratory Method to Measure Contagious Yawning in Rats

The method described here aims to obtain yawn contagion curves in pairs of familiar or unfamiliar male rats. Cages with holes separated by either clear or opaque partitions with (or without) holes are used to detect whether visual, olfactory, or both types of sensory cues can stimulate yawn contagion.

A Novel Procedure for Evaluating the Reinforcing Properties of Tastants in Laboratory Rats: Operant Intraoral Self-administration

2014

The current study evaluates a novel procedure for assessing the reinforcing effects of palatable solutions in laboratory rats: intraoral self-administration. To this end, operant responding (i.e. lever pressing) for intraoral infusions of sweet solutions at different concentrations was measured on continuous and progressive ratios schedules of reinforcement.
