Water Thermal Properties

Water thermal properties are the physical characteristics that determine how water stores, transfers, and exchanges heat, making it central to temperature regulation in natural and biological systems. Hydrogen bonding gives water a high specific heat capacity, so it absorbs substantial energy with relatively little temperature change, while its high heat of vaporization enables evaporative cooling; water also conducts heat through molecular motion. These properties stabilize temperatures in cells, tissues, bodies of water, and habitats, supporting biochemical reactions and organismal homeostasis. In biology, they help explain sweating, transpiration, aquatic thermal environments, and the temperature buffering of oceans and organisms.

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.

Here, we present an optimized methodology for producing mycelium-based composites (MBCs) from petrochemicals and polluting materials for thermal insulation applications. To become carbon-neutral and sustainable, biobased and compostable materials like mycelium bio-composite could be the solution. To determine if they meet the construction standards, several experiments were conducted.
