Aqueous Acid Protonation

Aqueous acid protonation is the transfer of a proton, H+, from an acid to a species dissolved in water, a fundamental process that governs acidity and chemical reactivity. Water commonly accepts the proton to form hydronium, H3O+, while the acid becomes its conjugate base; the extent of transfer depends on acid strength, concentration, and the equilibrium between reactants and products. This process provides the basis for interpreting pH, acid dissociation constants, and buffer behavior in chemistry. Understanding aqueous acid protonation supports reaction prediction, analytical titrations, environmental measurements, and the study of biological and industrial systems.

Chemical Reactions in Aqueous Solutions

2020

Chemical substances interact in many different ways. Certain chemical reactions exhibit common patterns of reactivity. Due to the vast number of chemical reactions, it becomes necessary to classify them based on the observed patterns of interaction. Water is a good solvent that can dissolve many substances. For this reason, many chemical reactions take place in water. Such reactions are called aqueous reactions. The three most common types of aqueous reactions are precipitation, acid-base, and...

This protocol describes a clinically-applicable means of dissolving hydrophobic compounds in an aqueous environment using combinations of self-assembling peptide and amino acid solutions. Our method resolves a major limitation of hydrophobic therapeutics, which lack safe, efficient means of solubility and delivery methods into clinical settings.

Leveling Effect and Non-Aqueous Acid-Base Solutions

This lesson defines the leveling effect in acidic and basic solutions and its role in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions. It is essential to understand the competing nature of various species in a chemical system. The Leveling Effect of a Solvent A generic acid (HA) reacts with the generic base (B-) to yield the corresponding conjugate base (A-) and conjugate acid (HB): Figure 1: A generic acid-base reaction However, if the reaction takes place in a solvent (HX), the solvent can also...

Acids, Bases and Neutralization Reactions

An acid-base reaction is one in which a hydrogen ion, H+, is transferred from one chemical species to another. Such reactions are of central importance to numerous natural and technological processes, ranging from the chemical transformations within cells or lakes and oceans to the industrial-scale production of fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and other substances essential to the society. There are several ways of defining an acid. In the context of aqueous solutions, an acid is a substance...

Acid Suppressive Drugs for Peptic Ulcer Disease: Proton Pump Inhibitors

2024

Peptic ulcers, often induced by H. pylori infections or NSAID usage, arise from disruptions in the delicate balance of gastric acid production. Peptic ulcers stem from heightened gastric acid levels due to H. pylori infections or NSAID use. The protective mucus layer diminishes in the presence of these factors, allowing gastric acid to erode the stomach lining and form ulcers. Gastric acid, a potent cocktail of hydrogen and chloride ions, is produced in specialized parietal cells within the...
