Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is the simplest alpha-hydroxy acid, a small organic compound with the formula HOCH₂COOH that combines a carboxylic acid group with a hydroxyl group. Its carboxyl group donates a proton in acid-base reactions, while the neighboring hydroxyl group supports hydrogen bonding and enables esterification and other transformations. These properties make glycolic acid useful in organic synthesis, polymer production, and aqueous formulations. In chemistry and materials research, its reactivity and biodegradability support the development of polyesters and other compounds, while controlled concentrations are also used in cosmetic formulations to promote surface exfoliation.

2023

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Viscosity is a measure of a fluid's resistance to flow, and it is a useful parameter in the design of efficient product processing and quality control in a wide range of industries. A variety of viscometers are used to obtain the most accurate readings of experimental materials. The standard method of measuring viscosity is through a glass tube viscometer, which...

An ethylene glycol-based vitrification method for mouse embryos is described. It is advantageous to other methods in its simplicity and low embryonic toxicity, and therefore can be broadly applicable to many strains of mice, including inbred and gene-modified mice.

Characteristics of Precipitation-formed Polyethylene Glycol Microgels Are Controlled by Molecular Weight of Reactants

This work describes the formation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) microgels via a photopolymerized precipitation reaction. Increasing the PEG molecular weight increased microgel diameter and swelling ratio. Simple adaptations to the PEG microgel precipitation reaction are explored for future applications of microgels as drug delivery vehicles and tissue engineering scaffolds.
