Inorganic Solid Purification

Inorganic solid purification is the removal of impurities from crystalline or particulate inorganic compounds to obtain a material with defined composition and performance. It relies on differences in properties such as solubility, volatility, melting behavior, particle size, or chemical reactivity, using processes including recrystallization, precipitation, sublimation, filtration, and thermal treatment. Careful control of solvent choice, temperature, atmosphere, and phase separation improves purity while limiting product loss or decomposition. These methods support analytical chemistry, solid-state synthesis, catalysis, ceramics, and electronic materials, where trace contaminants can alter structure, reactivity, conductivity, and reproducibility.

Purification of Ferrocene by Sublimation

2023

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Sublimation, the direct phase transition of a solid into a gas without first becoming a liquid, takes place at temperatures and pressures lower than that of the compound's triple point (Figure 1).The process of sublimation can be utilized to purify both organic and inorganic solids. During the purification technique, a solid is heated directly into the gas-phase. All non-volatile impurities are left behind while the...

An Assay for the Quantification of Inorganic Polyphosphate in Bacteria

Source: Pokhrel, A., et al. Assaying for Inorganic Polyphosphate in Bacteria. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates a colorimetric assay to measure inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) in bacterial samples. The procedure involves enzymatically converting polyP into free phosphate, which then reacts with molybdate and ascorbic acid to produce a blue-colored complex. By comparing the absorbance of this complex to a standard curve of known phosphate concentrations, the polyP content in bacterial...
